Diane Thompson has held the office of County Clerk since January 1, 2011. Prior to taking office, she served as Chief Deputy for thirteen years. As the Clerk of the County Commission, Diane maintains the permanent records of the County Commission, including minutes dating back to when the county was established in 1835. The County Clerk sets the Commissioners’ agenda, keeps records of their meetings and maintains their correspondence. Other duties include issuing liquor licenses and auctioneer licenses, processing Notary Publics, extending the tax books for railroad and utility companies that have a presence in Johnson County. Diane also works with property owners to create Neighborhood Improvement Districts for improvements to subdivision roads, creates the county budget for the Commissioners and publishes notice of the budget hearing in the local newspapers and maintains the Johnson County website . Diane works with the Assessor and Collector to certify the assessed valuation for Johnson County. She works with the cities, school districts, fire and ambulance districts to establish annual operating levies each year. In addition, Diane oversees the Human Resource Department, which processes payroll and benefits for over 180 county employees.
As the Election Authority, Diane and her Voter Registration staff maintain the voter rolls for Johnson County through the Missouri Centralized Voter Registration database. Additionally, Diane conducts all of the elections for the county, including ballot layout and printing, establishment and inspection of county polling places, certifying and training over 125 election judges and providing accurate and transparent election results to the 53,000 residents and 29,000 registered voters of Johnson County.
As a county elected official, Diane represents Johnson County as a member of the Johnson County Economic Development Corporation Board, serving on the Executive Board as well as Chair of the Community Engagement Task Force. She also represents the County on the following committees: Old Drum Plaza, Sustainability Partnership and MCVR Steering Committee. Diane has served on the Missouri Association of County Clerks and Election Authorities Executive Board since 2013 and will hold take office as President of the Association in September 2017.
Diane is a lifelong resident of Johnson County and a graduate of Warrensburg High School. She is married to David Thompson from Leeton, proud mom to three: USAF Reserve SrA Dalton Thompson, Dawson and Delaney. She loves watching sports (baseball and basketball are particular favorites), gardening, reading and spending time with family and friends.
